What are signs?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Signs has many definitions according to google these are just two of the definitions of sign:

  • a perceptible indication of something not immediately apparent (as a visible clue that something has happened); “he showed signs of strain”; “they welcomed the signs of spring”
  • a public display of a message; “he posted signs in all the shop windows”

I pulled these two because the pertain to the graphic design side of what signs are all about. Signs are meant to show something not immediately apparant like a store sign for the street so drivers and passer bys can find you or a sign that shows a sale that is going on.

These types of signs are the signs that designers create. They need to catch attention, keep attention long enough to read the message, and entice the customer/person to take action.

What are logos?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

You may be thinking duh, I know what logos are companies use them to identify themselves.  But the origin of logos is actually very different. Logos means in the case of speaking “a sentence, saying, or oration or it can mean the action of working in a commonplace, according to Wikipedia.

I find this very interesting, because graphic designers are generally designing logos for businesses which is where people work and do more of their oration or talking. This talking about businesses is what entitles logos.  The hard part nowadays is that there are so many logos in these case, image logos to distinguish that you have to find some way of setting yourself apart through your company and of course that is done by your work and your company perspective and reputation.

What are corporate reports?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Corporate reports are comprehensive information that describes the activities and overviews and organizaation.

This combined with research done by account executives or the graphic designer themselves gives the graphic designer information on the market.  This type of technique is used more in the advertising business to learn about competition, think of tactics, learn about their target audience, and pitch and idea to a client.  This extra information is especially important because it is what will differentiate that advertisement from others.

What does design have to do with magazines?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

This may seem like a dumb question, but magazines have evolved a lot more time with many varieties expanding and becoming their own segmented groups.  As Google states magazines are  a  publication that comes out a on regular periodic basis that contain articles and pictures that pertain to a specific audience that subscribe to them.

Now, what does this have to do with graphic designers.  Magazines use to be smaller and include more articles than advertising. Now that is not as much the case, predominantly because magazines have to pay to for the print, their writers, photographers, and graphic designers. The graphic designers do not only layout the pages, but work with the editors and photographer to create atomsphere and a cohesive design across the magazine. They may color correct images, be the last look at an editorial copy before press, space out the magazine for copy, or work alone after all the other compotents have been completed. The main thing to know is that magazines are usually designed by graphic designers working with varying members of the publication team to target a specific audience that must be kept in mind when designing. They usually work with a plethora of text, fonts, and images.
