Green Design: Go Green by Going Black

A Technological Tip on How to Save Energy
Having designed a few websites, I’ve come to realize that not a lot of people show love when presented with a design for a website with a black background, but the truth is, black=energy conservation. It takes more energy to power a website that is predominantly white/light colored.
So graphic/web designers, I challenge you to keep the environment in mind the next time you go to design a website. A clean and sophisticated design can still be accomplished with a darker background by simply keeping space in mind. Use it to your advantage by using colors that pop. Acid 3 Test

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

This month were going to try something different here at the TriLeaf Blog. An Acid Test! No, it’s not a hippie thing it’s a quick way to see if your browser is up to date on the web standards. I would like all of you to take this test by following the link at the end of this post and comment your score and the browser you’re using. It’s a simple test called the “Acid 3 Test”. Pretty much it will load a bunch of components that are web standards and scores your browsers performance depending on how well those components show up. You don’t have to do anything except load the page and it should only take a minute. 100/100 is what you’re going for here; anything below 60 and you might want to consider getting a better browser. Again though, please comment the score you got and the browser you’re using. The more information we get about the kinds of browsers the community is using; the better we can make our blog and the easier it will be to solve problems.
- Thanks again!
Alex

What is Design? – Navigation Bars

Monday, March 29th, 2010

What is a navigation bar?

These are found on websites. They are what help you get around or navigate the website.  These are the key important things in your website. If these don’t make since to the web user then they are not going to like getting around the website. Them getting around the website is the key. This a hyperlink text that connects them to varying pages into different inner WebPages of their information. Without them browsing your website, be it a catalog, product information, blog, or even a company they are not learning, buying, commenting, or not using.  Every web page should have a link back to the home page in their navigation bar.  It is very frustrating to not be able to get back to the main page and not get back to what you want without having to retype it in.

A note, I tend to like the way websites look without having an actual bar to navigate. Think outside the box on ways to make your pages navigational. What are some of your favorite types of navigation bars.

What does a graphic designer do?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Since we’ve been talking about compositions and layouts, I hope you realize the sheer complexity that comes with each layout and the many decisions that must be made along the way.

Here are just a number of types of publications that graphic designers would deal with along the way according to our job description:

What is web design?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

The definition of web design varies from person to person. Many times a graphic designer is also a web designer, although this is not always the case. Sometimes the graphic designer will just lay out the look of the website and then the web designer will have to actually code or program the website to work correctly.

Many businesses now are even trying to design their own website.  When they do this, they will need to know several things which include html, design, aesthics, and how get the website published. This may not seem like a lot but in reality html is very specific. Small errors can make a whole website not work properly.  This is why many times a team of graphic designers paired with web site designers (programmers) will design professional websites.  By having professionals do the job, companies can also ensure that their brand identity is the same across the board. Because in reality websites are now just another form of advertising.
