Placement of objects is part of the overall design.
Your focal point is what draws the eye into the imagery in the first point. So your focal point should not be in the dead center of the image. This takes away from the imagery and the overall layout of the design. Use the rule of thirds, this should be either the top or bottom of the left or right sides. This creates interest and add depth to your focal point as well as usually adding more space for the eye to move around in. Below is an examples of some optimal places for focal points according to the rule of thirds.

The rule of thirds, was actually taught to me during a photography class not in design. But it plays a large party in layouts and overall design theory I feel.
The rule of thirds generally speaking is the idea that an image should be divided into nine equal parts with two horizontal and two vertical lines (see below) The important part of the compositions should be placed where this lines intersect. This helps create tension and interest in the piece. Remember though when using this technique that not every intersection point needs a point of interest. That could cause too much interest and then make no area have a focal point.

Composition is the spacial property resulting from the arrangement of things, objects, or elements in relation to one another and as a whole. There are many types of composition: assymetrical, symmetrical, radial, mondrian grid, and repetition. There is also the rule of thirds, that many photographers follow when they set up their compositions. Composition is what sets up the layout and gives the idea of and presence of the piece as the backdrop to all the other elemens.
