Oh when you see that little cute panda, you may wonder what it means. I always knew it was a logo for something but until recently did not wonder about it’s affects. It is the World Wildlife Fund and is the leading conservation organization in the world that works in over 100 countries and is supported by 1.2 million members and 5 million globally.
Their mission is simple:
- protect natural areas and wild populations of plants and animals, including endangered species;
- promote sustainable approaches to the use of renewable natural resources; and
- promote more efficient use of resources and energy and the maximum reduction of pollution
I know being green this is important to me. I hope they also reach their goal for 2020 which is to conserve 19 of the world’s most important natural places and significantly change global markets to protect the future of nature.
The thing that pulled me in the most to adopt is they have a program to “adopt” animals. They have varying things you can adopt and they send you little gifts with them for adopting. I think it’d be a great present. I know I’d love if someone got me a dolphin adoptee.

Join an organization

If you are concerned about the environment and would like to help it, but are not sure what to do, or what things would help, simply join an organization that specializes in it. I don’t mean donating money or anything like that. Well, if you want to you can, but by simply putting your name and e-mail on a couple websites, you can add to the list of supporters for that organization. You can subscribe to their newsletter and receive the latest news regarding the environment and the really big issues.
Why don’t you try subscribing to Greenpeace or another green organization? Encourage your friends to do so as well! If you’re not already a fan of MyGreenSTL on facebook, please check it out! Click on the thumbs up “Like” button at the top of the page to become a supporter.

Make outdoor lighting solar powered or LED
With summer here, people will be spending more time outside burning the midnight oil outside of their homes possibly outside at their own homes or at friend’s houses. This means they will need some sort of light source so that they can say. So be sure when you go buy your outdoor lighting that you buy one of two things. There are many types of lighting now that are solar powered or have led lights which use less energy. They can light up your walk ways be used for decorative lighting in a string of lights or be sure as the main attraction lighting. Just be sure when your enjoying the outdoors to light some candles to get rid of the bugs that lights tend to attract.

Make lamps out of glass bottles
While I have personally never tried this particular art project, I would think it would not be too hard. You just by the components for a lamp like you would or can at any hardware store and pick your lampshade. I think the best part of this item is you could easily change styles of your lamps based on bottles color, size, design etc. And I’ve even seen bottle lamps that are really cool hanging lights. Those are a little bit harder to make though it would seem. I am seriously considering trying hanging bottle lamps though when we go to finish our basement or I was even thinking as a new chandeler design in the kitchen, our light is very outdated currently.

Do you plan to teach your children about being green?
While I do not plan on having children for several years, I know that I plan to teach them to be green from the start and that includes clothe diapers. Our children are the future… being that I a young still I have to say I sometimes think I am somewhat included in that meaning my influence could be double somehow, and that is not meant to be pompous. But I think it is true for all of the younger generation, we have another generation yet to be born and it kills me sometimes to see that people aren’t caring about that generation. the future lies in our hands and in the hands of our children who will be raied by us so we have to care.
For those of you who already have children, please feel free to share with us how you are teaching your kids to be green.

Walk to your local ice cream or sno cone shop
With summer looming in the air, ice cream shops are opening as well as sno cone shops. Before it gets to that blazing hot point where it is so hot you don’t want to be outside walk to them. Think while your walking your burning off those extra calories you are about to put on. And as many of us know, in America we are one of the most obese countries in the world. So a little bit of exercise for that sweet reward may bejust the trick. Think about it, Jared from Subway lost his weight by walking to Subway every day to get his sandwich, while ice cream is not as healthy it is a step in the right direction to walk to your destination. And no I am not calling you fat those of you are reading this I plan on doing this myself with an Oberweis within easy walking distance, though I must say I wish it was Ted Drewe’s instead. It saves on gas, on the environment, and overall on that crazy parking lot that tends to be full especially at night. It takes you just as long to find a parking space sometimes as to get there.

Use a rainwater tank to collect and store rain water run off
When it rains, the water usually just falls to the ground, but that water could be collected and saved for later use. Rainwater tanks, also known as rain barrels and water butts, are devices for collecting and maintaining harvested rain. Stored water is great for watering the garden and agriculture, as well as water to flush the toilets with, and to wash the car with. In extreme cases where water supplies are limited, it could be used to drink if properly filtered.

Recycling is great, but Precycling is even better!
So what is precycling you might be asking. Precycling is stopping your junk mail from being sent to you in the first place, thus cutting waste and helping the environment. There are probably many companies that do this. The one that I found was “Planet Green and Tonic.com”. For $36 plus $7 shipping and handling, they will stop your postal junk mail, plus send you 2 energy efficient light bulbs and a great reusable bag for groceries. In addition to that, they will plant five trees for each purchase. Check it out at http://precycle.tonic.com.
