Inside TriLeaf Designs – Beginnings

All of us have to start somewhere right?

The link below is the first website I ever made, which really wasn’t that long ago. I’m posting it to show that everyone has to start somewhere. Looking at it now I get a pretty a good laugh while saying to myself “what was I thinking using those colors?” But it’s got a special place in my heart because without that terrible looking website I wouldn’t be where I am today. So I would like you to show off your first something: design, website, program, or whatever helped you start off.

Inside TriLeaf Designs – Basecamp

We use Basecamp

To help us stay organized in the office project wise and what needs to be done that day, we use basecamp. It is an online program allows you to set up to do lists with varying categories and and then assign them to individuals within your company as well as due dates. This allows you to see when something is due and will even send out e-mail reminders when the event comes close just in case it has slipped your mind.  It is great for us as well when we have an idea that do not have time to get to office wise that we want to design we stock pile them in a to do list so that when things slow down a little bit project wise we won’t have forgotten that great idea.

Electronic Calendar vs. Old Style Calendar

It is our belief that technology while it is awesome, sometimes it will fail you. For instance, about 20 minutes ago we had no internet a circuit blew so it was done. Thus I could not work on blogs respond to e-mails or even work on projects all that much as our projects we keep online so that everyone can get to them when need be. So I began working on office organization, formulating new blog ideas, and saving and backing up files that should be backed up.  It’s funny how one little thing can throw everything off. But earlier this year, we also found that when a calendar freaks out online or on your phone and deletes all your meetings you are in big trouble. That is why we now keep both a digital version and a planner version of our schedule.

I know I cannot live without my planner that is neatly tucked in my purse.  It keeps me up to date on what I have going on. Be sure you have a back up.

Inside TriLeaf Designs – Hard Decisions

One of the hardest things is deciding what takes the highest priority

As a young business owner I think the hardest decision I have made has not been how to gain clients and keep them. Nor has it been how much to pay people or where to use our limited budget. The hardest thing I had to do is decide what to give my time to.

In life, as in business, you need balance. Balance between work and play. Between getting clients and keeping the ones you have. The biggest pull I have is between myself, family, employees and clients.

Myself. Sometimes I wonder even who that is anymore. With the early mornings, and late nights. I could not even tell you the last time I did something just for me.  Sometimes I wonder what if I did have time just to me what would I do. Correct that. If I had time all to myself, and everything was done, what would I do. I have to put that little disclaimer in for we have been in our house for almost three months now and even my cloths are still in boxes.

Family. Currently my family consists of my husband Keith, dog Abby, turtles Bella and Crush, and dragons Spartacus and Sandstone. Turtles seem happy to see me when I come home. Dragons just stare, Abby jumps up and down and my husband looks like a little puppy sadly staring out the window waiting for me to come home. He drags me to Home Depo and Walmart just to spend time with me. He tells me I need to be home more. There for I am now not working weekends. Also I am taking two nights off a week to be home. He always asks me, “is this the night you are going to be home”. Most of the time the answer is no.

Employees. My other family. Over the years I have groomed TriLeaf to run by itself. The amazing people in which I work with do an amazing job taking care of things and doing others. But it is when I hear from them that I need to be here more, that you know something is just not working. Now, just like at home, I am setting aside time just for my peeps. Two hours a day I am in the office and not out on meetings. This was the first week I did it, and I have to say it has been amazing. So much more done and so much more instruction given. But I have to say, I do not feel as productive out there growing my business.

Clients. The most important thing. I could spend 24/7 working on things and still have more I could do, more events to attend, and more phone calls to make. This is a on going battle which is the center of all my time constrants. But I enjoy my clients and working with them. If it was up to me it is all that I would do.

With all these different elements pulling on me, what is a girl to do? I guess make a schedule, stick with it, and hope that everyone gets the time they need from you. That hard part though it making it so I get time with myself. First I took a little time away from clients for family. Then for my staff. Maybe in a year I will be ready to take it for myself.

Inside TriLeaf Designs – Phone Books

Use old phone books for your laptops

If you walk into our office, you will find on one desk that has phone books sitting a top it. You may think how strange. We put our laptops on top of these to help keep them cool and from overheating. It also allows us room for sketchbooks underneath for basic sketches before we start drawing out our ideas on the computer.  So when you have an old phone book think about it’s uses. Could you use a makeshift holder for your laptop or to do something else with? If not be sure to recycle them if you plan on getting rid of them.

Inside TriLeaf Designs: Permission to spam?

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Is it right to send members of a Facebook group newsletters and information?

Working in marketing has brought up several issues that I would like to discuss with you, our followers. If a company, like TriLeaf, chooses to advertise mainly through social media (such as Facebook) is it ok to use those followers and think of them as customers? For example, is it ok to send members of our Green Saint Louis page or our Liam the Leafman page the company newsletter without specifically asking permission? In our particular case, we are not necessarily sending information about our services our trying to sell anything, but is it ok to automatically use our fans as a customer database?
I think most people would say no simply based on past experiences with other companies. Big companies (and sketchy ones) can abuse this and send spam or simply annoy you with frequent emails trying to sell a product or service. However, here at TriLeaf we would never outright try to sell ourselves to you through spam. We just want to spread our messages about being green in a more effective way and maybe occasionally insert a story about our services. What do you, our followers, think about this issue?

New office Supplies for use.

TriLeaf Designs just recently bought a green harddrive to back up all the clients work. This is a great tool because it allows us more computer space and the extra security of having the projects on another drive just in case a computer crashes so we don’t loose all of our work. We had one before but it was beginning to get a little bit full so we didn’t want to run out of space. Let me tell you that is not fun.  The drive we have is the Green fanton Drive.  It is small convenient and holds 1000 GB which is a lot.
