Do your proofing and editing online instead of with paper copies
Help your office save paper by using online editing. instead of printing out copies to proof, if possible, do it on screen. You’ll be able to save your edits and keep everything in one place, and not have to worry about keeping track of that one important piece of paper with all the critical information on it. It’s also much easier to share edits online, simply by attaching a document to email. Multiple people can quickly catch up on the latest version of the project without having to wait to receive a printed copy. Keep everyone in the loop and save a tree or two at the same time!

Your Eco Office – Blackle: Google goes to the Dark Side
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010The black background alternative to Google that will save your company money
Maybe it’s just me, but staring at white backgrounds all day on my monitor tends to tire the eyes. And it also uses a lot more resources – a lot more than say a black background. Here’s where Blackle comes into play. This search engine, powered by Google Custom Search, works just like any other but ditches the white. Easy on the eyes and the electric bill. There is some debate over whether the darker color scheme truly makes a difference in costs, depending on the type of monitor, but even if it is minimal, it’s worth it. And really, you’ll save your eyes. So check out Blackle the next time you need to search for information.

Your Eco Office – Organization
Sunday, July 18th, 2010Keep it Clean
This may sound quite ridiculous, but believe or not, keeping everything organized and in place helps, not only to find what you need faster, but also to visual pollution. You will feel less stressed with organization as well which causes health problems. Of course this term refers to bigger issues, such as seen a dumpster in front of your house every day. If you can take this issue into consideration in every aspect of your life, I am sure you will see an huge difference. Though it may take away to get this organized, I suggest starting little by little. But anyway, in smaller terms, it is applicable too.
Are you aware of this and think about keeping everything organized? Try to take a look at your office or pace of work and see if you have papers all around, coffee cups, and so on.

Software Helps You Get More from Your Ink Cartridges
Thursday, July 15th, 2010Printing bears a heavy environmental cost, which is related to both consumption of paper and the environmental footprint of print consumables.
Ink and toner cartridges for your printer are not only the most costly part of home computing, they are the most
environmentally damaging as well.
Recently, new bio-degradable inks have become available, but they cost a lot of money and they are not suitable fro every printer. Refilling printer cartridges with generic inks could cut costs but may cause more ink than necessary to be used. One way to reduce ink is to use your printer’s “draft mode”, which significantly reduces your print quality and saves you 10-15% on ink. However, there is software that allows you to use up to 70% less ink while maintaining a higher print quality.
Ink saver software lets you print more pages without having to refill your ink cartridge.

Preton’s HYPERLINK “http://www.preton.com/”ink saver software uses a pixel-optimization algorithm to eliminate the overlapping pixels which are unnecessary. These overlapping regions are created by the difference in pixel shapes between your computer and your printer, and they cause a tremendous waste of ink.
Because the software works with your computer, not your printer, it can optimize any inkjet or laser printer, and can work with 32-bit and 64-bit PCs. You’ll be able to see the potential environmental and financial savings inherent in the program. There is also a feature you can use to eliminate graphic elements, such as banner ads, in a print job, so that you can conserve paper as well as ink or toner.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that other ink saving methods can’t be used. If your printer can use bio-degradable inks or generic refills, this will only enhance the conservation of ink that PretonSaver provides.

Your Eco Office – Reusable Kitchen Supplies
Saturday, July 10th, 2010Keep Reusable kitchen items in the kitchen/lunch area
I know sometimes I want to bring in leftovers and I’m just sitting there thinking that is a huge hassle to worry about bringing a plate a nice fork and knife to be able to eat my left over pork chop for example. But I found out the other day that we have such supplies in our little kitchen area. This was great news to me. It means I can eat healthier real food instead of my sandwiches, jello, and preheated box meals. I’m sure if you add this addition to your kitchen people will notice and appreciate it I know I did when I found out. It also makes me feel better about what I’m eating and how I’m bringing it to work.

Your Eco Office – Recycling
Friday, July 9th, 2010Make an area in your office for recycling
Of course your going to want a lot of areas for recycling paper, it is going to be used at pretty much everyone’s desk. But also think about the other ideas. Plastic recycling in the kitchen area as well as by the vending machines to grab those who buy sodas as well as possibly an aluminum area. As mentioned in the earlier post, an area for cds and dvds as well you can then send them to the Compact Recycling Center of America.
I suggest that they you keep these areas nice and tidy though you don’t want your office to look unorganized.

Your Eco Office – Staplers
Saturday, July 3rd, 2010Print double-sided and you don’t need staplers as much.
Weird concept I know to say, but if you double side print you won’t need to staple as much pages together as often. This helps save money, it may not be all that much that your saving but in my eyes every penny helps out, especially in these struggling times. There are even staplers are environmentally friendly, we own one here at the office. The next time you are at the office and thinking about stapling something think before you do it. Can it be double sided? I guess my point is we get a lot of eco things in this office that I never really thought could be environmentally friendly but they are, so think about all the products when your going to buy things for your office could they be eco friendly and if so buy one.

Your Eco Office – A/C
Friday, June 25th, 2010Program your A/C to turn to a higher temperature at night.
Your office not occupied with people at work meaning it is not going to need to be as cold. All the bodies as well the heat during the day make the building run warmer so you will need the temperature set a little bit lower. But when no one is in the building what is the point. Now, I am not saying drop it down 15 or even 10 degrees different because your going to eat that cost cooling it back down in the morning. But if you program it to be 5 degrees warmer, and just have it kick back on say an hour and half before people start arriving to go back to a lower temperate you will save a lot of money. For every degree you change your thermostat you save about 2% more. Be sure to do this on weekends especially when no one will be in the office.

Your Eco Office – Spam Mail
Monday, June 14th, 2010Things you know are going to send you a lot of e-mail send to one specific e-mail.
This idea may be horrible, but I know I hate shifting through tons of spam e-mail to find the one e-mail that I am actually looking for. So I started by making up some random e-mail address that I could send all the spam catchers to. This saves me a lot of hassles. I just then go in every once in awhile and delete a whole bunch of things. As long as you don’t give this e-mail out for other purposes your saving yourself a lot of time because you don’t have to sit there and filter through then you can just delete them all.
